NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Newport News community came together Tuesday morning to celebrate the unveiling of Allen Iverson Way, a new street named after the NBA legend and Hampton Roads native.
The event was held at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center and several guests attended to celebrate Iverson, including Hampton athletic icon Boo Williams, Newport News Mayor Philip Jones, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott.
The celebration came after Newport News City Council approved the street designation in late February, which will overtake a portion of 16th Street from Wickham Avenue to Walnut Avenue.
Iverson is regarded as one of the greatest scorers in basketball. He was also chosen for the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in October 2021, honoring the "75 Greatest Players in NBA History.”
During the event, Youngkin announced that he proclaimed March 5 as Allen Iverson Day in Virginia, recognizing his legacy in professional basketball and impact on the Hampton Roads community.
