NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The City of Newport News is honoring former NBA legend and Hampton native Allen Iverson by naming a street section after him.
In a Tuesday night Newport News City Council meeting, members voted to rename a portion of 16th Street to Allen Iverson Way. The section being renamed stretches from Wickham Avenue to Walnut Avenue.
"City Council would like to recognize Mr. Iverson’s significant ties to the City of Newport News during his formative years," according to the proposal listed in the council's agenda.
Iverson is regarded as one of the greatest scorers in basketball. He was also chosen for the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in October 2021, honoring the "75 Greatest Players in NBA History.”
