17-year-old killed in morning shooting in Newport News

Police Chief Steve Drew and Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones gave an update on the shooting on Gloucester Drive.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A 17-year-old was fatally shot Tuesday morning in Newport News, police said at a press conference.

At 7 a.m., police responded to a Shotspotter activation in the 5700 block of Arlington Ave at an apartment complex. Officers said when they arrived a teen with a gunshot wound was found in the 700 block of Gloucester Drive, and taken to an area hospital where he later died.

"Right now we do not tie this with any incident that happened a city school," Police Chief Steve Drew said at a press conference at NNPD headquarters. Mayor Phillip Jones added that it appeared to be a targeted incident, not a random act.

But Jones and Chief Drew also shared that they did not believe the incident to be tied to any of the schools in the area.

This comes after a 15-year-old boy died after he was shot at a school bus stop just one week earlier on Sept. 10. The boy was a Menchville High School student. After that shooting, Chief Drew added that he did not believe it to be a random act of violence.

When asked if last week's shooting was related, Drew said he's "not ruling anything out," though the investigation is in its very early stages.

"Both incidents will be solved. We have good information coming in," Chief Drew said.

"We refuse to let one or two incidents define our city," Jones said. In a statement released later Tuesday morning, he goes on to say, "The safety and well-being of our community remain our highest priority. These acts of senseless violence are unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our city.”

This incident was the third shooting in Newport News over the last week.
