Three candidates lead in Newport News School Board race

With provisional votes remaining to be counted, three candidates for Newport News School Board are leading their respective races.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — With provisional votes remaining to be counted as of Wednesday evening, three School Board candidates in Newport News are leading their races.

Maritsa A. Alger won reelection for the South District in an unopposed race. She has served on the board for one year and is a retired teacher, assistant principal, and principal.

In the North District, Rasheena D. Harris is leading the election over two opponents. Harris has garnered over 55% of the vote, compared to 32% for William L. Beverley and 11% for John Bloom.

For the Central District, Rebecca Shwayder Aman is leading before provisional ballots with 60% of the vote compared to 38% for Christopher A. Worthington. Aman is an attorney and was first elected to the School Board in 2020.
