NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — With Memorial Day Weekend events taking place across Hampton Roads, one city is making sure that drivers are traveling safely.
The Newport News Police Department shared they are increasing patrols over the holiday weekend to crack down on people driving under the influence.
This operation began Thursday, May 23, and will last through Memorial Day on Monday, May 27. Each day between the hours of 7 p.m. through 3 a.m., drivers can expect increased DUI patrols.
The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the "100 deadliest days" on the road for teen drivers. With millions of Americans expected to hit the road during Memorial Day weekend, it's important to follow the rules of the road and not get behind the wheel if you have been drinking or using drugs.
Rideshare services are available across Hampton Roads, and Drive Safe Hampton Roads will provide a code to redeem a free or discounted Lyft ride on Sunday, May 26, and Monday, May 27.
