NORFOLK, Va. — Memorial Day is just around the corner, and Drive Safe Hampton Roads is once again partnering with Lyft to offer 757 Sober Rides during what it calls "the deadliest weekend to drive."
From 5 p.m. Sunday, May 26 until 2 a.m. Monday, May 27, Lyft users aged 21 and older can receive a discount on their ride. The offer will also be available between 5 p.m. Monday, May 27 and 2 a.m. Tuesday, May 28.
The offer intends to encourage individuals celebrating the unofficial start of summer to secure a safe ride home.
"If you are the designated driver, commit to 100% sobriety to keep you and your friends safe," said Jonathan Turner, 757 Sober Ride Chairperson. " If you plan to drink, please don’t drive. Be smart, plan ahead, and use 757 Sober Ride to get home safely. The life you save may be your own, or someone you love.”
The offer is only valid for rides starting or ending in Hampton Roads. The promotional codes will be posted at 5 p.m. Sunday and again at 5 p.m. Monday on the Drive Safe Hampton Roads website here.
"The 14 weeks from Memorial Day to Labor Day have earned the grim title of the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer," according to the release.
Of the 43.8 million people predicted to travel at least 50 miles from their homes Memorial Day weekend, AAA says 38.4 million will be driving — the most recorded since 2000.
Virginia State Police (VSP) reports that nine drivers and passengers, including four motorcyclists, died during Memorial Day weekend in 2023.
