'Everybody needs to step up' | Family of missing Newport News woman seeks answers

Brown's family held a press conference outside of the Newport News Police Department.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — On Friday, the family of Sherree Brown held a press conference outside of the Newport News Police Department, pleading for her safe return.

“I can’t do this; it’s been 72 days. I haven’t heard from my daughter. I haven’t seen my daughter. I normally talk to my daughter. Please, someone help me find Sherree,” said Sherree Brown’s mother, Sharron Sanford Brown.

The family held a press conference outside of the Newport News Police Department (NNPD).

Police said Brown went missing on Oct. 17 but wasn't reported missing until Oct. 24. On Dec. 4, Virginia State Police (VSP) issued a critically missing adult alert on behalf of the NNPD.

“We just searching and searching. City council members, mayor, everybody needs to step up and find my daughter,” Sherree Brown’s father, Darrel Brown Sr. said.

After the press conference, the family went to the Berkley South Neighborhood. The family said it was the last place someone reported seeing Brown.

Brown’s family said Sherree deals with several health issues, and she was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer.

“She hasn’t done chemo since September 18. That was her last chemo date that she went to,” said Brown’s daughter, A’Lexus Gibbs.

Brown’s mother feels like law enforcement can do more to look for her daughter.

“Chief Drew and everyone, I want to see the accountability that you’re doing for my daughter. I want actions for my daughter,” said Sanford Brown.

In the past, Chief Drew has said that he and his officers are committed to locating Sherree Brown and have worked long hours on the case.

Moreover, Chief Drew also said he and his officers have canvassed places Brown is known to frequent, spoken with people who know her, and contacted the FBI and Homeland Security.
