Man arrested in Newport News murder, police say

Paul Mulleano, 39, has been charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and other weapons charges, police said.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A man was arrested Saturday in connection to the deadly shooting of a 38-year-old man in Newport News last month.

Paul Joseph Mulleano, 39, has been charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and other weapons charges, the Newport News Police Department said.

The shooting happened on the evening of Jan. 27. The police department said officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of 35th Street around 7:50 p.m. in response to an automatic gunshot detector system alert. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was taken to the hospital for care when he later died. The victim was identified as 38-year-old Jave Edwards of Newport News.

After an investigation, police identified Mulleano, who goes by the alias "Goo-Goo," as a suspect in the homicide, and an arrest warrant was issued on Jan. 29. He was found in Hampton and then taken into custody.
