NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — On Friday evening, a group of Newport News residents gathered to say goodbye to their beloved neighbor, Marvin Jackson. Many neighbors question the motive behind his death.
“We [are] going to miss you, and it’s not going to be the same around here,” said Kareem.
Neighbors left candles, balloons, and notes along a fence on 33rd Street and Roanoke Avenue, where neighbors said Jackson often spent time.
“I grew up with him for years, many years. [For] many years, I grew under him. You know what I’m saying,” said another neighbor.
On Monday night, someone tragically shot Jackson at the intersection of 31st Street and Roanoke Avenue, just a few blocks away from where his memorial now sits. Police say medics took him to the hospital, where he later died.
Taleisha Dixon said she spoke to Jackson just a few days before he was killed.
“You wouldn’t think that that would have been his outcome. Cause he was nice to everybody. He was loving. He had a huge heart. He just made sure everybody around him was good, from adults to kids to dogs. It didn’t matter,” she said.
So far, police have not arrested anyone for Jackson’s death.
For now, everyone from the oldest to the youngest has one wish: “I hope they catch those people,” said Azaila Dixon, Taleisha’s Dixon’s daughter.
