NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A man is dead after a shooting on Monday night, the Newport News Police Department (NNPD) said.
Police responded to a call reporting a shooting at the intersection of 31st Street and Roanoke Avenue around 10:41 p.m. When officers arrived, they found 54-year-old Marvin Jackson suffering from a gunshot wound.
Jackson was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said the investigation is ongoing, explaining, "We did have an officer ride with the victim to the hospital, so we’ll be looking at conversations that happened there."
The shooting happened just two blocks away from an alleged dog attack on July 28.
13News Now spoke with Jackson, who was the owner of two pit bull terriers. Jackson admitted the dogs bit a man, telling 13News Now reporter Stephanie Johnson, "I really apologize tonight, if there's anything that I can do, just let me know."
Jackson's family and friends confirm the homicide victim is the same man who spoke with 13News Now just weeks earlier. A family member said Newport News Animal Services now has the dogs, after a separate incident earlier this month. NNPD confirms this.
No suspects are reportedly in custody for Jackson's shooting. Chief Drew explained that when it comes to solving these crimes, no details from the public are too small. He said during a Facebook Live on Tuesday, "I would rather that information come forward. It’s like a big puzzle, we put these pieces together, that may be a piece that connects things for us that could be helpful."
He also said despite a significant drop in homicides this year in comparison to 2023: "I want to be very, very clear. Those numbers are people. Those statistics, that data is individuals, people in our community with family members."
The motive behind the shooting is not clear at this point. Newport News Police Department is still investigating this incident.
