HAMPTON, Va. — One man is dead, and another man is injured following a shooting in Hampton's north side.
Hampton Police said they received a 911 call for a shooting at around 4:30 p.m. on North King Street. Once there, investigators said they found two men inside a home suffering from gunshot injuries.
Paramedics took both men to a nearby hospital, but one died shortly after. 13News Now is told the other man is expected to be okay.
"All violent crimes in our community, especially when there is a loss of life, just your concern is for the people involved, the families all involved," said Jimmy Gray, newly-elected mayor for Hampton.
Previously, Gray served as the city's vice mayor. Following the 2024 election, Gray became former mayor Donnie Tuck's successor and said during his campaign that he had focus on lowering crime throughout the city.
One of those ways could include adding ShotSpotter cameras.
"If that is what our [police] chief needs to do their jobs better, than we are willing to invest in that, or if there is other technology that he can use, then we should listen," said Gray. "We want to invest in giving them all the tools they need in their kit in order to respond to situations just like this."
ShotSpotter cameras are technology that is designed to identify the sound and location of gunshots and send alerts to police officers.
Already, law enforcement in the cities of Virginia Beach and Newport News have installed the cameras and credited them to finding criminals.
However, the cameras have been pulled from other cities such as Chicago and Charlotte for some inaccurate reports.
Mayor-elect Gray said the cameras are something to consider for the future.
