HAMPTON, Va. — A 15-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection to a shooting that injured a baby last week, the Hampton Police Division (HPD) said.
The teen, who has not been identified because of their age, is charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a juvenile and one count of allowing access to a firearm by a juvenile.
The shooting happened on May 28 on Clyde Street. Officers arrived to find a one-year-old baby shot. The child was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said.
Police previously said another child accidentally shot the victim with an unsecured firearm. Hampton Police Chief Jimmie Wideman told 13News Now Monday HPD is still looking into where the gun came from and who was holding the gun when it went off.
“As the investigation identifies who was actually responsible for the child being struck, i.e. whoever was in physical possession of the firearm when it was discharged, depending on circumstances gleamed through the investigation, there could be additional charges," Chief Wideman said.
Chief Wideman couldn’t say if the toddler and teen are related; however, he said they do live in the same home. The chief said the 1-year-old toddler is recovering and doing well.
“From my understanding, the baby is in good condition. I mean, no risk of any life or further complications related to it," Chief Wideman said.
Police said last week that all those involved in the incident have been identified. However, if you have any information that may help detectives, you're asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-562-5887 or submit a tip online at P3Tips.com.
