CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A man is dead on Father’s Day morning after crashing into a pond in Chesapeake, police confirm.
Jeremiah Chabitch said he woke up around 7 a.m. to find a large police presence outside of his apartment building.
“There were five, six, seven police cars and forensics units right there with the whole parking lot taped off," said Chabitch.
Chesapeake police officers responded to Red Cedar Ct. in the Cedars at Greenbriar Apartment complex around 3:30 a.m. Sunday for calls about a vehicle in a pond. Once officers arrived on the scene, they found the vehicle fully submerged in the pond.
“It was like a Chevy SUV or something. It was halfway on the grass [and] halfway on the parking lot like it was pulled out of the pond," said Chabitch.
The department’s dive team pulled the vehicle from the pond and found an adult man inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Monday, police identified the man as 37-year-old Richard Carroll Jr. of Chesapeake.
Although Chabitch said he moved into the complex a few weeks ago, he recognized the vehicle.
“I [saw] it in the parking lot every day since I moved here. I didn’t recognize the person, I was too far away," said Chabitch.
The crash remains under investigation.
