Family, friends of Canal Drive homicide victim gather in his honor

"Remember his love, remember his light, remember his laughter, remember his energy," the mother of Mika Satterfield said.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Mika Satterfield, 19, was a beloved son, brother, uncle and cousin.

His mother Mateen Satterfield said Mika had just graduated from Manor High School in Portsmouth in 2022. He had goals of going into real estate.

Friday night, around 100 people came together to honor Mika. Family members and friends released balloons in his memory.

Candles surrounded Mika's photos at Marina Point Apartments in Chesapeake.

"He was a very loving, happy-go-lucky, energetic, athletic, smiley-face, goofball young boy," said Mateen, who described Mika's smile as one that lit the world.

Mika's siblings looked back at memories fondly, calling him funny, sweet and someone they could always count on.

13News Now obtained court records Friday, which revealed some information witnesses said about the shooting.

Kelvin Harris, 23, of Alexandria faces felony gun, second-degree murder and hit-and-run related charges.

Mateen said she feels thankful for a quick arrest in the case, "Because this was not a situation that I could allow become a cold case."

Multiple witnesses told detectives they saw the driver of a dark-colored sedan shoot Mika. While Mika tried to run away, the driver hit him and dragged him with his car then took off, documents went on to say.

It is unclear what led up to the violence. Police said they found Mika at a parking lot. Medics took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release.

A witness later noticed the car and reported it as suspicious to 911, a criminal complaint stated. When officers responded, they found Harris and detained him.

Since then, there has been an outpouring of support for Mika's family, something they said they were appreciative for.

"Just hold everybody close, because you never know when it's going to be your last goodbye," said Mika's older sibling.

Mateen said she wants everyone to take in this message: "Let people know this is not OK. We're just hoping that — stop the violence and stop the silence."

Mateen told 13News Now some of the next steps for her family include seeking justice as the case moves through the court system.

Harris is set to appear next in court on October 19. He is held without bail at the Chesapeake City Jail.
