With Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump coming to Chesapeake, his campaign event on Friday is expected to cause traffic issues in the city.
The campaign event is set for the Historic Greenbrier Farms at 3 p.m. Friday, June 28, according to a release. Sources told 13News Now that Gov. Glenn Youngkin is expected to attend the rally.
Chesapeake’s Director of Public Communication Heath Covey told 13News Now up to 10,000 people could attend.
“We know that there is going to be a tremendous amount of traffic and congestion throughout the day on Friday," Covey said.
Covey said city staff are helping the Secret Service prepare for Trump's visit. He said police officers, firefighters and sheriff's deputies will be all hands on deck. There will also be medical support on site.
City officials said in a Facebook post that Sign Pine Road will be closed to all but local traffic starting at 8 a.m. Friday. The closure will remain in place until the event ends. People can access the event site using St. Brides Road.
The Route 168 Chesapeake Expressway and Interstate 64 will have intermittent closures throughout Friday, according to the City of Chesapeake. While no other specific road closures are planned, the roads in the area are expected to be heavily congested.
Officials encourage people to have extreme caution and patience, and consider alternate routes when driving Friday.
“The best thing you can do is recognize that there’s going to be congestion, leave early, pack a lot of patience with you, think about alternate routes if you can," Covey said.
