CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Friday, November 22, marks two years since a deadly mass shooting at a Walmart Supercenter in Chesapeake.
The shooter, a manager at the Walmart, entered the store's breakroom around 10:12 that night in 2022 and began to fire at fellow employees. He killed six employees and injured several others before turning the gun on himself.
A former overnight worker recalled the scary moments that unfolded in the break room around the time shifts started changing.
"That's when I went under one of the tables, I grabbed a chair and shielded myself while he was still shooting in the room," Myles Whitaker previously told 13News Now.
Several employees filed lawsuits against Walmart in the aftermath of the shooting, including Briana Tyler, who said her supervisor shot at her while chasing her through the store. Earlier this year, the lawsuit was dismissed after attorneys said all claims were resolved to Tyler's satisfaction.
The Walmart, located on Sam's Circle, was closed for several months following the shooting. It reopened to the public in April of 2023 after undergoing a $200,000 renovation that included design changes and changes to the breakroom where the shooting took place.
