CHESAPEAKE, Va. — WVEC anchor Ashley Smith was on hand to emcee the annual Relay for Life fundraiser in Chesapeake Saturday.

The event took place at Chesapeake City Park where survivors and caregivers gathered for an afternoon of information and advocacy.

The lineup included an opening ceremony, survivor's lap, and lunch for registered participants.

Stepping out in their signature purple, survivors were honored immediately following the opening ceremony with the survivor's lap, where friends and family were on hand to walk or run in solidarity with their survivor.

Survivors were also treated to a luncheon from 11-1pm provided by Taste Unlimited.  Registered survivors also received a goody bag, along with a survivor pin and medal.

Raising over $260k, the fundraiser is essential for “funding groundbreaking cancer research and patient care programs,” according to their website.
