Hampton Roads residents urged to use 757 Sober Ride on New Year's

The promo code covers rides up to $15 that have a pick-up location or end destination within Hampton Roads, according to DSHR.

NORFOLK, Va. — Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) is once again partnering with the ride-share app Lyft to ensure local residents have a safe time ringing in the new year.

From 4 p.m. New Year's Eve to 4 a.m. New Year's Day, Hampton Roads residents can take advantage of a free or reduced Lyft ride using the 757 Sober Ride promo code. According to DSHR's website, the code is: 757SRNYE23

The code covers rides up to $15 that have a pick-up location or end destination within Hampton Roads, according to DSHR.

“It is critical that anyone heading out to a bar or party to plan for a sober driver to see them home safely,” said Jonathan Turner, 757 Sober Ride Chairperson. “If you have a holiday gathering on your calendar, make smart choices and plan out how you’re going to get home safely once the celebration ends. We want drivers to take this night seriously. Driving drunk is deadly, and no one should ever take that risk.”

During New Year's 2023, the National Safety Council (NSC) projects an estimated 375 people will die on U.S. roadways this holiday.

Between New Year's Eve and New Year's Day last year, according to DSHR's release, there were 124 crashes resulting in two fatalities and 71 injuries across Hampton Road. In 2021, NSC reported that 40% of traffic fatalities on New Year's involved an alcohol-impaired driver.

DSHR partnered with Lyft earlier this year to bring safe rides to residents on both Thanksgiving and Halloween.
