Virginia Beach stabbing suspect had history of domestic violence against his mother, court docs say

Virginia Beach Police said their hearts are with the victims, as an investigation unfolds into 22-year old Marques Hasbrouck's alleged actions.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD)said their hearts are with the victims, as an investigation unfolds into 22-year-old Marques Hasbrouck's alleged actions.

VBPD officers shot and killed Hasbrouck on Saturday night on White Beam Court, after a 911 call came in about a possible stabbing.

By the time law enforcement arrived, they said they found Hasbrouck armed outside with a 20” crowbar in one hand and a 27” metal rod in the other. Neighbors say he charged directly at the officers.

"I hear them screaming, 'Drop it, drop it, drop it.' He did not drop it. He charged at them," said one neighbor who did not want to be identified. "There was no stopping him, he had been tazed. It had no effect."

Virginia Beach Police confirmed they deployed a Taser on Hasbrouck, and then ultimately opened fire after multiple attempts to de-escalate the confrontation. Virginia Beach EMS then pronounced Hasbrouck dead.

Officers then made their way inside the house and discovered three victims inside. Neighbors said minutes before officers arrived, one of the victims went door-to-door begging for help.

"The grandmother came, rang the door the doorbell, I answered the door... she was hysterical, begging me to call 911 cause her daughter had been stabbed," said an eyewitness.

First responders took two of the victims to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and declared one woman dead at the scene.

Police later identified her as 58-year-old Victoria Hasbrouck. Court records show she is the suspect's adoptive mother and it was not the first time Marques Hasbrouck allegedly stabbed her.

"Shortly after they first moved in, he attacked her and stabbed her and she went to the hospital and I saw them leading him out in handcuffs, but a few days later he was back," said a neighbor.

Court records show Virginia Beach Police arrested and charged Marques in 2017 with malicious wounding after he allegedly stabbed his mother in the face with a pair of scissors.

Investigators said Marques admitted to doing it with 'murderous intent,' because the two had argued about him playing video games and not taking his medication.

Officers said he stabbed her multiple times in the face, deliberately aiming for her eyes because "they are soft."

Neighbors said they want to remember Victoria as a mother who tried her best.

"Before this, before the police showed up... she told me she was working so hard with him, and then his happened," said a neighbor. "She didn't deserve this, she was the nicest lady."

Loved ones for Victoria have set up an online fund for the Hasbrouck family to help with medical bills and funeral costs related to the incident that resulted in her death.

Multiple VBPD officers are now on administrative leave as a criminal and internal investigation is underway. All evidence will then be turned over to Virginia Beach's Commonwealth Attorney for further review.

Virginia Beach Police Chief, Paul Neudigate, said he stood by his officers in a statement reading in part: "Responding to domestic incidents is one of the most dangerous aspects of our job, with every encounter carrying with it the possibility of danger. These situations are often volatile and unpredictable, as was the case last night. We support our officers, the affected family, and our community as we navigate this difficult time together."

This remains an active, ongoing investigation.
