The third suspect was sentenced to nearly 50 years in prison for his role in the deadly 2016 robbery.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Newport News man will spend nearly 50 years behind bars for a robbery that turned deadly in 2016, according to Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares.

In a release Monday, Miyares' office announced Kadara Miles was sentenced to 48 years in prison on first-degree felony murder, use of a firearm in the commission of murder, robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of robbery charges.

The charges stem from November 2016, when Tommy Strayhorn was shot in the ear and the ankle at an apartment complex on Randolph Road. Strayhorn was found lying face-down in the building's entryway and was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a few days later, prosecutors said.

“With the sentencing of Kardara Miles, justice has finally been served for Tommy Strayhorn’s family. I’m grateful for my team’s hard work to ensure that those responsible for violent crime are held accountable,” Miyares said. “This case is a great example of collaboration between local and state resources in the name of safety and justice.”

Two others, Marqui Pittman and James Miles, were previously convicted in connection to the case.
