VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Virginia Beach Police Department is investigating a shooting in a Wendy's parking lot that left a man seriously hurt Sunday night.
Multiple law enforcement and emergency personnel responded to the scene on South Independence Boulevard and Bonney Road near Town Center just before 6:40 p.m.
Police set up crime scene tape around the parking lot of the fast-food restaurant.
A spokesperson with Virginia Beach Police Department said first responders took a man to the hospital with a life-threatening gunshot wound. An officer at the scene confirmed the man was shot in the leg.
Details around a possible suspect or what led up to the shooting have not been released at this time.
According to the VBPD spokesperson, it is believed the victim has nothing to do with the business.
Detectives are still interviewing the victim and witnesses, as well as going over surveillance videos, the spokesperson added.
Many customers and local shoppers 13News Now spoke with Monday did not know about the shooting. However, one resident who did not want to be named said she heard about the violence on the news.
"Terrible thing that’s happening all the time," she said. "It’s horrible.”
The shooting comes less than a week after someone shot and killed a 17-year-old employee at another Hampton Roads fast-food restaurant. It happened at the Rally’s off West Mercury Boulevard at the Riverpointe Shopping Center in Hampton.
Hampton Police Division detectives are still searching for the suspect in that case.
Back in Virginia Beach, police said the investigation as to what happened at the Wendy’s is still unfolding.
13News Now has reached out to Wendy's for comment, but we have not yet heard back.
