HAMPTON, Va. — A 17-year-old employee has died after getting shot during a fight at a Rally's Drive-In in Hampton Wednesday evening, authorities said.
Now, the Hampton Police Division is looking for a suspect they say is connected to the incident.
HPD said the suspect is a black male who is approximately 5'9". He was last seen wearing a grey-hooded sweatshirt with hood up, blue jeans and white shoes.
At around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, HPD said officers were called to the shooting in the 1000 block of West Mercury Boulevard near North Armistead Avenue.
Police said a physical altercation broke out between the teenage boy and an unknown male, who brandished a firearm and shot the teen. The maiming suspect left before officers arrived at the scene.
The 17-year-old was brought to a hospital, where he later died.
The Rally's on West Mercury Boulevard sat quietly with doors closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Flowers were set right by the speaker box in the drive-through to honor the teenager who died, marking a mourning sign for his loved ones who were supposed to be enjoying the holiday.
A woman, who goes by the name of Jones, said she was sitting in her car in the adjacent parking lot at the time of the shooting. She said she didn't see everything that happened, but heard a majority of it.
"It was so many sounds. It was like a loud sound and then a screaming and then a car that just 'skurt!' and drove away," Jones said. "So, I looked up around to see what was going on and before I knew it, the police was coming, too."
Jones said she often goes to this Rally's and is always treated kindly by all of the employees there.
"I'm literally in it every day because a lot of the times I go there to use the bathroom and they're always really nice and respectful. It's just really sad. I'm very disturbed about what happened," she said. "It's just a really sad situation and I'm very sorry for the family and all of the workers who here who have to go through this. It's a senseless crime and it definitely needs to stop."
