Boy, 16, charged with second-degree murder in another teen's shooting death, Norfolk police says

The teen was taken into police custody in the State of California last month and extradited back to Virginia last Friday.

NORFOLK, Va. — A 16-year-old boy has been charged in connection to a homicide that killed a 15-year-old boy, according to a press release from the Norfolk Police Department (NPD).

Around 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 19, 2023, police were dispatched to the 1700 block of Vernon Drive, near Compostela Road, after receiving calls about a shooting.

When officers arrived on the scene that afternoon, they found a 15-year-old boy suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was then transported to a local hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

At the time, authorities did not have any suspect information.

Now, as a result of their investigation, NPD homicide detectives have charged a 16-year-old boy with second-degree murder, and use of a firearm after he was taken into police custody in California on Oct. 28, 2024, and extradited back to Virginia last Friday, Nov. 22, 2024. 

He is currently being held in Norfolk Detention Center.

Detectives still have not released a motive or any of the circumstances that may have led up to this incident. They also have not released the name of the teenage victim or suspect.
