NORFOLK, Va. — A 15-year-old boy has died after he was shot in Norfolk Thursday afternoon, police confirmed. Now, people in the Diggs Town area are calling for the violence to stop.
The Norfolk Police Department (NPD) said the shooting happened in the 1700 block of Vernon Drive, near Campostella Road, around 3:30 p.m. The teenager was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died.
Soon after, different police agencies canvased the area between the two roads. They knocked on doors in search of witnesses to the homicide, which happened in broad daylight.
Ramin Fatehi, Norfolk's Commonwealth's Attorney, joined the search.
“The Norfolk Police are investigating. They received the call out here. They were out here very quickly. They are working the scene," Fatehi said. "I have confidence in the work that they’re doing, I know that they are doing a very thorough job."
Neighbors responded to the young boy's death too, echoing a recurring sentiment in the region: they want the gun violence to end.
"I feel like it just needs to stop. It’s unnecessary; things can be solved in different ways by talking or by other means," one neighbor said. "The guns got to come down.”
Others were specifically upset by the timing of the deadly shooting. It happened in the middle of the day, while children were coming home from school or playing outside.
"We need more police out here and more cameras and stuff like that," another neighbor said.
Police have not released a motive or any suspect info yet. They also have not released the name of the teenage victim.
