Man arrested, accused of shooting and killing his uncle in Newport News

Cintell Kelley is now facing multiple felonies in connection to his uncle's death, including first-degree murder and several gun charges.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Newport News man is behind bars after investigators say he shot and killed his uncle during a violent argument on Sunday morning.

31-year-old Cintell Kelley is now facing multiple felonies in connection to his uncle's death, 41-year-old Wayne McMillan, including first-degree murder and several gun charges.

While the case is an active investigation, recently filed court documents reveal the two were not alone in the house as the victim's mother heard the violent altercation.

She told police she allegedly heard the two "tussling" and "arguing" behind a locked door in the woman's apartment. After she tried to pull it open, the victim's mother said she heard her son scream, "Mom, call for help; my leg is broken. He is going to kill me.'

Then moments later, the victim's mother said she heard a window shatter and at least four gunshots.

"Never, I've never seen anything like it," said one neighbor. "There's kids around here, it's quiet, this doesn't normally happen here."

Neighbors told 13News Now they did not know anything was wrong until Newport News Police flooded the Heritage Forest Apartments' parking lot around four in the morning. Investigators said when they walked inside, they found McMillan suffering from a gunshot wound and Kelley nearby with a gun on a dresser.

Detectives said Kelley is a six-time convicted felon and is now facing up to five charges in connection to his uncle's death.

This shooting marks the third domestic-related murder to happen in Newport News in 2024.

Police Chief Steve Drew issued a statement, saying: "Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects us all, regardless of our backgrounds or circumstances. If you or someone you know is involved in a dangerous relationship, we encourage you to reach out for help. There are resources and programs available to support victims of domestic violence and prevent future incidents. My heart goes out to all who have lost a life as a result of domestic violence."

Kelley is currently being held at Newport News City Jail without bond.
