NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Newport News man died in an apparent domestic-related shooting early Sunday morning, police say.
Police have identified the victim as 41-year-old Wayne McMillan of Newport News.
Police arrested 31-year-old Cintel Kelley, the victim's nephew, at the scene. He is now charged with first degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a felon, discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling and reckless handling of a firearm.
Around 4:30 a.m., officers with the Newport News Police Department were dispatched to the Heritage Forest Apartments on Forest Lake Court for reports of an argument and shots fired.
Police found a man inside a residence with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
Newport News police officers and forensics teams walked in and out of the apartment Sunday morning, hours after the shooting.
Neighbors said they were surprised to look out their windows and see the large police presence, as many did not hear the gunshots during the night.
"I saw maybe 10, 15 officers all walking around," said one neighbor. "They were all over the street and blocked off that building."
Police recovered a firearm at the scene.
Newport News Police said this is the third domestic-related homicide to happen this year in the city.
Neighbors said it's a type of violence that is unusual for the area.
"Never, I've never seen anything like it," said one neighbor. "There's kids around here, it's quiet, this doesn't normally happen here."
Authorities say the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
