PORTSMOUTH, Va. — On Wednesday night, police announced they were able to identify the man who had been shot several times before being left in a dumpster and set on fire on Pepperwood Court on Nov. 18.
Police said Kurtis Lee Watson, 45, was the person who has died, and his family was notified.
Tuesday, 13News Now obtained documents from Portsmouth police that detailed what police have determined so far about last week's body discovered in a burning dumpster behind the Bethel Worship Center on Pepperwood Court.
The search warrant says that around 9 p.m. on Nov. 18, the Portsmouth Fire Department received a 911 call that the dumpster was on fire. After extinguishing the fire, they discovered the body and called in the Portsmouth Police Department.
There, police say, they discovered a spent cartridge casing and blood stains outside of the dumpster.
Video from a nearby home that police obtained showed two people walking away from Bethel Worship Center around ten minutes before the 911 call was received. One of the individuals was observed carrying what appeared to be a bag, police said.
An autopsy was conducted on the body and showed that the person sustained gunshot wounds to the head, back, thigh and bullet fragments in their foot.
Police have not yet identified or charged any suspects, but they ask those who could potentially have any information on Watson's whereabouts before Monday, Nov. 18 or any other information about this incident to contact the Portsmouth Police Investigations Bureau at 757–393–8536.
