PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A man killed in a shooting on Augustine Circle in Portsmouth last month wasn't the intended target, court documents obtained by 13News Now revealed.
The shooting happened on the afternoon of Feb. 9, leaving 25-year-old Arthur Lee Harris Jr. dead.
According to the documents, one of the three suspects, Jakobi Kyree Taylor, told investigators in an interview that a person walking alongside Harris was the person they were trying to shoot. Taylor also admitted to driving the vehicle with the suspects after the shooting happened, the documents said.
Police found Harris lying in the middle of the street with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
"I saw him laying out on the street over there, police had the entire area tapped off, no one coming in or out," said one woman.
Brian Antwan Peoples and Taylor, both 24, were charged with first-degree murder and other gun-related offenses. Police said a third suspect, 26-year-old Lavelle Cobb Newtown, is still wanted for murder.
Neighbors said the shooting happened right as children got off the school bus to return home.
"It could have been a kid, it could have been anyone," said another neighbor. "The bullet could have traveled and this could have been even worse."
Peoples and Taylor are being held without bond at the Portsmouth City Jail.
