Teen charged in connection to shooting that killed 21-year-old Chesapeake man

More than a week after the shooting, some neighbors are still grappling with what they saw the evening of the shooting.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A 17-year-old boy is facing multiple charges, including murder, in connection to a shooting in the Camelot neighborhood, the Chesapeake Police Department (CPD) said.

The teen is accused of firing the deadly shot that killed 21-year-old Khyree Slan on Sir Lancelot Drive near Camelot Boulevard on the evening of Saturday, June 8.

More than a week after the shooting, some neighbors are still grappling with what they saw that evening.

“It was a nice day. People was out here, and out of the blue, just out of the blue, pop, pop, pop," said one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous. "This young man, he was screaming, ‘My brother! They shot my brother!’ He was screaming, screaming, screaming to the top of his lungs.”

The neighbor told 13News Now that she, her daughter and 10-year-old grandson ducked for cover when they heard the gunfire.

“My daughter said, ‘Get in the house! Get in the house!’ and I ran to hide somewhere," the neighbor recalled.

The witness said in just minutes, Chesapeake police officers filled the street. First responders took Slan to a hospital where he ultimately died from his injuries.

CPD announced the arrest of the 17-year-old on Wednesday. The teen, who has not been publicly named, is facing second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and underage possession of a handgun charges.

Police have not said how or if the suspect knew Slan.

Meanwhile, Slan's family gathered to remember his life at a vigil Wednesday night. There, loved ones called for an end to gun violence.

“Let God handle this violence," one speaker at the vigil said. "It’s no need for us to retaliate and say, ‘I’m going to get whoever it was that did this thing.’ God is bigger, and he’s greater, and he knows how and what to do in this situation.”

Chesapeake police say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the Crime Line at 1-888-562-5887 or submit an online tip at P3Tips.
