Flood watch dropped for South Hampton Roads, remains for northeast NC Thursday

Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected at times from this morning through evening, as a frontal boundary approaches the area.

NORFOLK, Va. — A flood watch is in effect Thursday through the evening for northeastern North Carolina, as the flood watch for southern portions of Hampton Roads has been dropped.

We are on the warm and humid side of a frontal boundary moving through the Ohio River Valley and approaching the mid-Atlantic from the northwest.

With humid air in place, and a weaker front stalled just northwest of the area, we will likely see enough lift in the atmosphere to produce numerous showers and thunderstorms off and on through the day and into Thursday evening.

Shower and thunderstorm chances will ebb and flow during the daytime hours, but rain chances will continue through the evening. There is a level 2 (Slight) risk of excessive rainfall.

We also have a level 1 (Marginal) risk of severe weather across eastern North Carolina heading into the evening.

There is the potential for some of the storms to be slow-moving and this could lead to heavy downpours and an increased threat of flooding.

Runoff from heavy rain may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas, where slow-moving storms could overwhelm storm drains.

Heading into the evening hours, we can see an additional .5"-1" of rain in parts of North Carolina and 0-.5" in areas of Hampton Roads.

While the flood threat is lower over the northern parts of the 13News Now viewing area, everyone across eastern Virginia and North Carolina should stay "weather aware" and check back with 13News Now for updates throughout the day and evening.
