VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach will see extreme UV rays on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
While the rip current risk is low on Tuesday, sun damage potentials are high. NWS says it's important to take precautions when the UV index reaches 11+, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. UV rays at this scale can burn unprotected skin in minutes.
The time of day plays a big role. Midday is when UV radiation peaks as this is when the sun is highest in the sky. It is typically not as strong in the early morning and late in the afternoon.
The UV Index represents the amount of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth’s surface, at any instant in time and on a scale from 1 to 11. The overall intensity of the sun’s radiation varies according to many different factors.
The weather on Tuesday is perfect beach weather with sunny skies, warm temps and a nice breeze, so many may be headed out to the coast. Just make sure to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours, seek shade and avoid bright surfaces that reflect UV.
