NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Parts of Hampton Roads could get their first taste of wintry weather on Monday morning.

Meteorologists anticipate temperatures to hover around freezing with the possibility of flurries. People living on the Peninsula have the best chance of seeing snowfall in our area.

Hampton Roads resident Nicole Stevenson said she’s taking extra precautions before hitting the roads.

“I typically check maps and the weather to make sure there’s no inclement weather or if I need to prepare, make sure there’s a little bit more time…Just being vigilant. That’s really all you can do when you’re out on the road," she told 13News Now.

Hampton Communications Coordinator Mike Holtzclaw said crews will monitor the weather overnight.

“They’re keeping a real close eye. We have teams ready to respond as needed," Holtzclaw said.

A spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said their crews will also monitor the roadways, especially bridges and overpasses.

“Particularly the bridges are what they keep an eye on because that’s what’s going to freeze first," Holtzclaw explained.

VDOT said you can check the roadways before you leave the house by calling 511 or checking the 511 Virginia mobile app.

“We always caution people if the roads are icy, to just drive with very much caution and not go out if you don’t have to," Holtzclaw said.

A spokesperson with Virginia State Police (VSP) says they'll have full coverage on all shifts and expect extended shifts if necessary.
