Waterspout reported at Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills

A Kill Devil Hills spokeswoman said the town's Fire Department and Ocean Rescue Division made sure no one was injured by the weather event around 2:30 p.m.

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — Emergency response crews were called out to the Avalon Pier after a waterspout and weather damage were reported there Sunday afternoon.

A Kill Devil Hills spokeswoman said the town's Fire Department and Ocean Rescue Division made sure no one was injured by the weather event, picked up debris that was left behind and secured items on the beach, tents and umbrellas.

She said pier staff also worked to pick up blown trash cans and chairs, "but fortunately, the debris and damage were minimal."

Staff at the Avalon Pier were not immediately available to comment, but a live camera on the pier's website appeared to show caution tape and damaged railings.

A special marine warning was also issued for about an hour at 2:30 p.m. for waters near Currituck Beach and the Oregon Inlet after Dare County Emergency Management observed a waterspout, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning stated that thunderstorm north of the Roanoke Sound was producing waterspouts and wind gusts of 34 knots or greater. The National Weather Service advised boaters in the area to move to safe harbor, due to gusty winds and high waves.

The Kill Devil Hills spokeswoman said more unfavorable weather was on the way and the Town "strongly urges residents and visitors to remain weather aware and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings."
