Here's how the weather tends to play out for September in Hampton Roads

We lose the most amount of daylight in the month of September.

NORFOLK, Va. — As we head into Meteorological fall, here in Hampton Roads we will certainly start to see cooler afternoons and much shorter days. In fact, September is the month when we lose the most amount of daylight.

Our average high at the beginning of September starts in the mid-80s, around 85 degrees, where you can still feel the summer heat on your skin. As we progress throughout the month, the average temperatures start to tumble, and our temperatures drop into the upper 70s by late September.

Our overnight lows also drop a bit, starting around 70 degrees and dipping into the lower 60s, so if you like cooler and comfortable mornings, more of those are on the way.

September can also be full of some extreme temperature swings. The hottest day ever recorded on a September day was 100 degrees, while the lowest was 40 degrees which was set back in the late 1800s!

As far as precipitation goes, we average around nine rainy days throughout September and see about 5.40 inches of rain by the end of the month, making it the third rainiest month behind July and August. The most rain we've ever seen in the month was close to 9 inches, 8.93 inches to be exact, set back in 2006.

Something that is also fairly noticeable is the lack of daylight.  At the start of September, our sunrise is a little past 6:30 while our sunsets are still around 7:30, but by the end, we lose 43 minutes, and the sun starts to set around 6:49 p.m.

Now if you're looking forward to winter and even seeing some snow, there has never been any snow ever recorded here in the month of September or even October; the earliest snowfall on record in Hampton Roads was set back in November of 1891 with a total of 6.1".
