NORFOLK, Va. — It's going to be a wet, windy weekend with remnants of Hurricane Ian moving into the area, but it's not all bad. Here are some key points on why Hampton Roads needs all this rain.
As of midnight Friday morning at Norfolk International Airport, the region was 11.14" below average for rainfall in 2022.
The entire 13News Now viewing area is in a drought. Most of us are in moderate drought, but the Eastern Shore is in severe drought.
We've only had two days this month when Norfolk got more than light sprinkles at the airport. Before today's heavy rain our total rainfall for Sept 2022 was .38", leaving us 4.86" below average for the month.
You don’t make that up that kind of rain deficit with a couple of thunderstorms. You need a prolonged wet weather pattern, and this tropical system with a lot of moisture sends us in the right direction.
Unfortunately, some of the rain may happen a little too quickly so soak into the ground, and some flooding is possible. But whatever we get will be great for Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore!
Check out the potential for rainfall over the next couple of days in the graphic map below.
What Virginia can expect from Hurricane Ian:
After making a second mainland US landfall, the *remnants* of Ian will move north-northwest and bring moisture through parts of the Appalachian Mountains.
Hampton Roads will not see a "direct hit" from Ian, but we will see rain, wind and some tidal flooding Friday and possibly later this weekend as the storm gets absorbed by a cold front and stalls over western Virginia.
