NORFOLK, Va. — October 2024 will likely go down as one of the top five driest October in Norfolk ever.
As of Tuesday, October 29, we've done 27 days without any rainfall at the Norfolk International Airport (ORF). The last time we saw rain was on October 1 and 2, and even that rainfall was very light.
On the 1st, ORF only received 0.05" of rain. On the 2nd it was even less, with only 0.01" recorded. So in total, we've seen a whopping 0.06" of rainfall this month. With this small amount of rain, October 2024 currently ranks as the third driest October ever. We haven't seen a month this dry in 24 years!
The only two Octobers that rank above October 2024 on the all-time driest list are October 2000 and October 1874. October 1874 is in second place with only 0.04" of rainfall recorded. October 2000 is the driest October of all-time with only 0.01" of rainfall all month long.
Rounding out the top five all-time driest Octobers list are October 1924 and October 1934, in fourth and fifth places respectfully.
This 27-day stretch of dry weather is close to tying the all-time dry streak in Norfolk. In 2000, Norfolk went 33 days straight without rain. To tie this record, we would have to make it to November 4, 2024, without seeing any rain at the Norfolk International Airport.
For the rest of October 2024 and early November, substantial rainfall will be hard to come by. To see the 7-day forecast, head to our forecast story or tune into 13News Now on-air or through our 13News Now+ app.
