NORFOLK, Va. — Virginia’s Sales Tax Holiday is here and it is a great time to stock up on hurricane supplies. If you have a hurricane supply kit ready to go, now is the time to double-check that it’s up to date.
Hurricane preparedness items, up to $1,000 each, are included in the Sales Tax Holiday. This includes things like portable generators, chainsaws, ice packs, batteries, radios, portable light sources, waterproof sheeting, first aid kits, and more... everything you need to prepare for hurricane season.
The sales tax holiday runs from August 2 to August 4, 2024.
If you don't have a supply kit ready to go, here's a list of things you will need:
- Make sure you have a flashlight with extra batteries; a radio, in case you lose power; and a fire extinguisher. Candles and open flames can be dangerous and should be avoided.
- You will want to make sure you have at least one gallon of water, per person, per day in your kit, and plan for seven days.
- Also, have plenty of non-perishable food items that won’t expire before hurricane season ends at the end of November.
And don't forget about the first aid kit! Your kit should be well-stocked with bandages, wipes, an instant ice pack, adhesive tape, and scissors.
Finally, you should take care of the outside of your home. Trim branches and trees and secure or reinforce your windows and doors.
As always, the 13News Now Hurricane Guide is available online and on our app. It’s a great resource for everything you need to know this hurricane season.
