NORFOLK, Va. — A cold front that came through early in the morning of July 1 chased away the sweltering heat and humidity that wrapped up June 2024 for Hampton Roads, Virginia. With the turning of the calendar, it's a great time to look back on the month of June.
The morning low of 56° that occurred on June 1 was the coldest reading for the entire month. The hottest days came on the 23rd and 26th, when the mercury climbed to 99°.
When you take all the high and low temperatures throughout the month, the average for the month was 79.0°. That was 2.3° above normal, making last month the fifth warmest June at Norfolk on record, and the warmest June in 14 years. Norfolk's record warmest June occurred in 2010 when the average temperature was 80.3°.
At Norfolk International Airport, exactly 3.00 inches of rain fell during the month. That was 1.43 inches below average. But here's the kicker... if the month was just seven hours longer, Norfolk's June 2024 would have been ABOVE average! During the early morning hours of Monday, July 1, more than 1.7" fell at the airport.
When we look back on the record books years from now, June 2024 will be thought of as hot and dry. While it certainly has been a hot one, with the rainfall, we really aren't that far from average.
Now that the rain has cleared Hampton Roads, the next few days should remain dry, with cooler and less humid conditions to start July. Warmer weather will return by the Fourth of July.
The following weekend will be hot and humid with storm chances back in the forecast.
