Tropical Storm Gordon forms in the eastern Atlantic

Tropical Storm Gordon becomes the 7th named system of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

NORFOLK, Va. — As we trek past the peak of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, we now have our seventh named storm of the season.

Tropical Storm Gordon has formed way out in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 miles to the east of the lesser Antilles and 970 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands.

As of Friday morning, Gordon has max sustained winds of 40 mph and is expected to continue to push off towards the west northwest at 10 mph, not posing a threat to any land over the next couple of days.

As Gordon continues to head towards the east, this storm is not expected to strengthen very quickly and will mostly stay a weak tropical storm for at least the next couple of days. Gordon is even forecast to weaken back into a depression by Sunday. This is because the environmental conditions for where the storm has developed are not extremely favorable to support a strong system or allow for rapid intensification, which is good news.

Most of the models have Gordon going out to sea and becoming a fish storm, but there is still time for the models to shift. Luckily, since this storm is so far out in the eastern Atlantic, we have plenty of time to continue monitoring this storm.

As for us here in Hampton Roads, there is not a cause for any concern, as this storm is well over 2,000 miles away and if it was to head towards the east, it could take up to 10-12 days to reach the United States, giving us plenty of time to watch the system.
