With warmer weather arriving in Hampton Roads, remember to stay cool

With the weather heating up, here are some "wet blanket" reminders about staying cool and safe as we head into summer.

NORFOLK, Va. — I love the warm weather as much as anyone, but there are a few things we need to keep in mind... call them wet blanket reminders.

We aren’t used to the summer heat yet, so we need to be extra careful.

FORECAST: Very warm weather continues with highs in the 80s

Is it too hot to walk my dog outside?

You may want to take your dog for a walk, but remember the pavement is much hotter than the air temperature. With air temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s, you’ll need to use caution as some asphalt surfaces could climb to more than 135 or 140° fahrenheit!

It’s also never a good idea to leave your dog or children in a car, even for a few moments. With air temperatures in the upper 80s, other items should not be left in, as well.

Interior temperatures in cars left closed up for 60 minutes in this kind of heat could warm to between 120 and 130°.

How to keep cool in hot weather

When you are outside, stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Our UV Index is very high, so remember sunscreen and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun's rays. And if you’re doing anything strenuous like yardwork or exercise, listen to your body. Take breaks when you need to.

Beach water temperature is still chilly

With the warm-up into the mid-to-upper 80s, many people will begin to hit the beaches. But remember, those water temperatures are still chilly: generally in the upper 50s to near 60°.

If you plan to ocean kayak or paddleboard, you should wear a lifejacket. Know your limits and know the forecast. Cold water can be dangerous. If you fall in, you can still suffer cold shock. You could gasp for breath or start rapid breathing. Cold water can cause a sudden spike in heart rate and blood pressure.

Cold shock can also cause panic or a stress reaction which impairs clear thinking and decision-making.

It’s exciting to have the warmer temperatures in our forecast, but everyone needs to use a little bit of extra caution as we start the transition to the summer weather.
