NORFOLK, Va. — Some of the coldest air in 13 months has moved into southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina overnight.
A coastal low brought rain to Hampton Roads Tuesday afternoon, but it’s what was lurking behind that low that will get teeth chattering!
Cold high pressure is forecast to build across the Deep South Wednesday before shifting to the Carolinas Wednesday night. While this will provide the area with plenty of sunshine, it will also bring some of the coldest air we have seen in almost thirteen months!
Temperatures Wednesday morning will be in the teens to around 20° in most locations. The last time Norfolk was this cold was December 26, 2022, when temperatures dropped to 19° the day after Christmas.
But that only tells part of the story. Breezy west winds will make it feel even colder, and wind chills could be in the single digits in northern parts of Hampton Roads, and it doesn’t get much better in the afternoon. Despite air temperatures in the middle to upper 30s, wind chills will likely be in the 20s most of the day.
The good news is *this* cold blast will be very short-lived, with temperatures back in the upper 40s on Thursday. However, another blast of cold air is set to move in this weekend, and it looks like that blast will be a little colder and last a little longer.
