Severe thunderstorm warning and watch expires for Virginia

Sunny skies faded early afternoon as a cold front moved into the area bringing strong winds, hail and a low tornado risk.

NORFOLK, Va. — A front dropped in from the north Monday afternoon and evening and is triggered isolated to scattered showers and storms. Some were strong and severe.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for several northern and central counties and cities, including Accomack County, Williamsburg and Jamestown, at around 7 p.m. The warning included Waverly, Wakefield, and Ivor, VA and ends at 9:15 p.m.

Around 7:30 p.m. the NWS said on its X account that radars show a line of storms from the Eastern Shore up to Amelia County are producing strong winds and hail. NWS advises Williamsburg, Hampton Roads metro and southside Virginia residents to "stay put indoors for the next hour or two."

Earlier in the day, a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for all of Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore, the Peninsula and beyond. The majority of Virginia is under this watch. The watch is in effect until 10 p.m. Monday.

A backdoor cold front will drop down from the north with a much cooler push of air coming in from the north-northeast tonight, bringing with it a chance of thunderstorms and severe weather, before that it will be mostly sunny into early afternoon.

The cold front, just north of the area will move through during the late afternoon and evening hours. Most of the area is under a Level 2, or "slight" risk for severe weather. The risk for Central Virginia and the Peninsula has been raised to Level 3, or "enhanced."

Because of this severe weather threat, a Weather Alert Day has been issued for Monday.
