Elevated Fire Risk in Southeast Virginia: What You Need to Know
A cold front crossed southeast Virginia early Thursday morning. The region is now experiencing an elevated fire risk, and residents should exercise caution. A combination of weather conditions and already dry ground has created the increased wildfire potential.
While there are no Fire Weather Watches or Warnings currently in effect for southeast Virginia or northeast North Carolina, the potential for ignited fires to spread rapidly or get out of control is real.
Norfolk International Airport hasn't received any measurable precipitation since October 2. While not currently in a drought, the ground is dry. More dry air is sweeping into the region Thursday and the forecast minimum humidity levels should fall to 25-35%. The low humidity along with anticipated winds gusting 20-30 mph can quickly spread any flames that ignite. Additionally, this ongoing dry spell has left fallen leaves and some of the vegetation parched, increasing its flammability.
As we move through October, it’s crucial to recognize that dry leaves and grasses are abundant, providing ample fuel for any potential fires.
Weather Patterns: The past three weeks of dry weather, and current low humidity create an environment where fires can easily ignite and spread. Gusty winds can carry embers far from the source, increasing the risk of new ignitions.
Vegetation: With many areas experiencing continuing rain-free conditions, vegetation has become tinder-dry. This material can catch fire from even the smallest spark.
Human Activity: The majority of wildfires in Virginia are caused by human activity. Whether it's a discarded cigarette, an unattended campfire, fireworks, or the use of machinery, the potential for accidental ignitions is significantly heightened during periods of elevated fire risk.
In light of the current fire risk, residents are encouraged to take the following precautions:
Avoid Open Flames: Everyone is urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly.
Be Cautious with Equipment: When using lawnmowers or other machinery, make sure they are well-maintained to prevent sparks. Avoid using equipment in dry areas.
Proper Disposal: Ensure that cigarettes and matches are fully extinguished and disposed of properly. Never throw them out of a vehicle window.
Report Fires: If you see any smoke or fire, report it immediately to local authorities. Quick reporting can prevent small fires from growing out of control.
