FORECAST: Cold fronts bring breezy, cooler weather Tuesday

Cold air will bring the possibility of frost Tuesday night into Wednesday morning away from the coast.

NORFOLK, Va. — After a mild afternoon with temperatures 10-15˚ above normal on Monday, a couple of cold fronts between yesterday and this morning will cause temperatures to plummet on Tuesday.

Skies cleared early this morning. Walking out the door, it will be cool and breezy with morning temperatures in the middle 50s around the coast and middle 40s inland. Wind gusts could be as high as 30 mph.

With gusty winds and the dry conditions, an elevated risk of fire danger could be present Tuesday afternoon. It will be sunny with high temperatures in the lower-to-middle 60s.

Norfolk Tuesday

Clear skies Tuesday night will make for a cold night. Overnight lows will range from the lower 30s well inland to the middle 40s along the coast. There's a possibility of a frost and/or freeze Tuesday night into Wednesday morning away from the coast, but breezy conditions could keep a heavy frost from forming.

High pressure builds into the region Wednesday, keeping the colder air in place. It will be mostly sunny much of the day, but some clouds will roll in by late afternoon and evening. Despite the sunshine, high temperatures will only be in the middle 50s.

Another weak system will approach the region Thursday, bringing a good chance for light rain late Thursday into early Friday. However, like the last couple of systems, this front will not be a drought buster, with rainfall generally ¼" or less. With the cloud cover and light rain, it will be cool Thursday with highs around 60°.

The weather looks tranquil and seasonable for Friday and into the weekend as high pressure builds back in over the area. High temperatures will rise back into the middle 60s.

In the Tropics...

We are monitoring one area of potential tropical development this week.

A tropical wave over the central Caribbean Sea is producing an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions appear conducive for development, and a tropical depression will likely form late this week as the system moves westward into the western Caribbean Sea. After that, the disturbance is expected to slow down and meander through the weekend. Interests across the western Caribbean Sea should monitor the progress of this system.
