Eastern Shore receives heaviest snowfall, most overnight power outages resolved in the morning

Strong winds and snowfall shut down many businesses on the Eastern Shore, as crews worked overnight to restore power to thousands of people.

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Eastern Shore received the heaviest snowfall from our region’s latest winter storm, while heavy winds caused power outages throughout the area.

Early Saturday morning, close to 5,000 customers of A&N Electric Cooperative didn’t have power.

By 10 a.m., about 600 customers were in the dark, with outages fluctuating throughout the day.

Most businesses in the retail district were closed Saturday. Overnight, people on the Eastern Shore said they heard howling winds.

“It was crazy I was up all hours of the night looking out the hotel window and you couldn’t even see across the parking lot,” James Wood said. He drove into Cape Charles for a painting job on Saturday.

Crews were able to clean off the major roads, making them drive-able if necessary, but residential and back roads were still slushy and icy

“It’s a crazy start of the winter, you know, and I think probably we’ll still get a couple more decent snowfalls before it’s all over with,” Wood said.

Now, he’s thinking about the roads re-icing.

"I’m sure it’ll drop down, it’s going to be real slick tonight,” Wood said. “Just keep it in four wheel drive and take my time, make sure to make it back safe.”

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is operating with Level 3 wind restrictions, with reported winds in excess of 55 mph.

Drivers who are able to cross are instructed to travel at a maximum speed of 25 mph.
