NORFOLK, Va. — We have finally made it to the last month of the year. The holidays are approaching quickly and so are the cooler temperatures. Over the last few days, it certainly has been feeling like winter, and for the first week of December here in Hampton Roads, temperatures are going to be well below normal
But here's what a typical December looks like for us: the average high for the beginning of the month tends to be in the upper 50s and by the end of the month, we normally see highs getting into the lower 50s. For overnight lows, the temperatures dip from the lower 40s at the beginning of the month, to the mid-30s by December 31.
And even though it's not looking like we'll be anywhere near these records, the warmest daytime high ever recorded for the area during December was 82 degrees and the lowest was just 5 degrees.
During this month, we can see temperatures dip well below freezing, which can only mean one thing: snow! We haven't seen measurable snow here for the last two winters, but there's still that chance we can this year! On average, we see 1.1" of snow for December, but in 1892, we saw just over 17 inches.
One of the best parts of December many people may like is that once we pass the first day of winter on December 21, the sunsets finally start to get later in the day! We start off the month with our sunset at around 4:48 p.m. and at the end of the month, the sun starts to set just before 5 o'clock, at 4:59 p.m.
