NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk International Airport is preparing for a big week.
On Monday, the airport begins a $1 billion improvement campaign with plans to transform that facility from top to bottom.
The airport is breaking ground on three new gates as well as a new U.S. Customs Inspections facility to screen passengers.
The airport authority Executive Vice President says the current facility is outdated.
It is on the ground level. So passengers who arrive have to go downstairs, clear screening and then come back upstairs to exit the concourse.
Airport officials say the new facility will help its efforts to secure nonstop international flights.
