NORFOLK, Va. — AAA expects 115 million Americans to travel for Christmas and New Years, including three million Virginians.
Most people will drive to their holiday destination, and Saturday is expected to be the busiest on the roads; but what about the sky?
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said passengers should expect airport security checkpoints to be busier this year compared to last year.
The agency said the busiest days to fly will be next Friday and New Year’s day. The TSA expects to screen more than 2.5 million passengers on each of those days, which is a 6% increase from the previous year.
On Friday, the holiday rush was in full swing at Norfolk International Airport, but luckily, traveler Heather Ferguson told 13News Now that she didn’t run into any issues.
“Everything’s been running on time, clear sailing today," Ferguson said.
Ferguson flew from Chicago to Norfolk to visit her parents for the holidays.
"It’s been years since I spent Christmas with my mom. So, I’m really, really excited to be here," she said.
Ferguson isn't the only one traveling far distances to get to the Mermaid City for the holidays. Kazzy Cassebeer said she flew from Hawaii.
“...Seeing family and just having that quality time," Cassebeer said. "We all love to gather, most wonderful time of the year!”
For those hitting the roads, AAA says the busiest days will be Saturday the 23rd and Thursday the 28th. To avoid the worst traffic, drivers should leave before lunchtime or after 7 p.m.
