Gun seized at Norfolk International Airport

The Smith and Wesson .380 pistol was loaded with eight bullets.

NORFOLK, Va. — Author's note: The video above is on file from March 2022.

Transportation Security Administration officers at Norfolk International Airport (ORF) stopped a local woman from carrying a loaded handgun onto her flight Tuesday, the TSA said.

Her carry-on bag triggered an alarm in the security checkpoint X-ray unit, they said. TSA then notified Airport Authority Police who confiscated the handgun and cited her on a weapons violation.

The case will go to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney next, for possible criminal prosecution.

A TSA spokeswoman said the gun was loaded with eight bullets.

Passengers are allowed to fly with their guns, but there are strict procedures that must be followed, and the gun must be declared at the airport's front desk.

According to TSA, 23 guns were found at ORF in 2021, and so far in 2022, 12 guns have been confiscated.
