YORK COUNTY, Va. — York County will soon install speed cameras in six school zones.
The 30-day grace period begins on August 26, which means drivers will only receive a warning if they are caught speeding.
Once that grace period ends on September 25, drivers violating speed limits by more than 10 mph will be fined $100 dollars.
York-Poquoson Sheriff Ron Montgomery said this comes after law enforcement got many complaints about speeding in school zones during the 2023 school year.
During a five-day period last year, the sheriff's office conducted a test to see how many people were speeding during school drop off and pick up times at just five schools. The test showed that 3,725 vehicles drove through the school zones at speeds in excess of eleven mph above the posted speed limit.
"It was clear that this issue was a public safety concern and needed to be addressed," Sheriff Montgomery said.
For now, speed cameras will be installed in just six of the county's 19 school zones:
- Bruton High School
- Dare Elementary
- Grafton Bethel Elementary School
- Seaford Elementary
- Tabb Elementary
- York High School
“The school district fully supports this program because it is fundamentally about keeping our children safe," Dr. Shandor, Superintendent of Schools for the York County School Division. "These cameras will deter speeding and create a safer environment for our students as they travel to and from school.”
Anyone with questions or concerns about the speed cameras can call or email the sheriff at sheriff@yorkcounty.gov or (757) 890-3660.
